Basque sculptor Cristina Iglesias (b. 1956) is one of the most important of an emerging generation of contemporary Spanish artists. This book, the catalogue of Iglesias' first solo museum exhibition in the United States, presents 21 of her recent works.
Iglesias uses concrete, iron, glass, and other industrial materials in her imposing, large-scale sculpture and more delicate, human-scale works. In her installations, Iglesias seeks to redefine the gallery space, beckoning viewers to walk around, and sometimes through, her sculpture. She also creates large photo-based silkscreens that depict miniature models of her sculptural works. These, explains Carmen Gimenez, serve to further blur the distinction between natural environment and constructed space, an important issue for the artist.
